Day four went well. The first day with Noel, she peed a total of 36 times from noon to 11pm. Today from 7am-11pm, she peed 11 times. All were outside. That's great news. It could be she was nervous the first day, or was overfed....who knows..but I'm happy with the progress. I am feeding her through toys and during training, so she is eating all day and still the pee count has declined. The crate is doing its job, as she has not had any accidents in there. I have been careful not to leave her in the crate long on her own - only an hour or two and then at night. I dare say, the verdict is in and the evidence shows that this dog CAN be housetrained...with lots of supervision and consistency. Let's hope there is no backsliding and I have to eat those words! It's strange going to work with Noel living here. When my clients describe their issues, I nod and say, yes..I know exactly what you're going through! It's tough to have a new dog with issues and still have a personal life. The good news is that this is very temporary. Kids spend years in diapers! This dog has confirmed a lot for me. So much of dog training is based on what cues the dog responds to reliably. Trying to get Noel to be reliably housetrained, chew toy trained, exercised and to be polite has taken up all my time. There isn't any time left in the day to teach her behaviors on cue. That stuff should be used to help teach manners or after the dog already has manners. Learning how to live successfully in a home with people is the priority. I lay awake last night thinking about a dog operating manual. What information would it contain? Should I have kept my idea to myself and written a book? Could I sell it or give it away? Who would read it anyway? I'm a littly nutty about dogs. I believe I will write it, but first I need some sleep. These blog posts won't sell any books. It's almost midnight and this dog is wearing me out! Till tomorrow..... |
